Archie apparently had several siblings. He married Blanche Davies (Cardiff, Wales) in Texas in 1904. Name: David Dallas CommentsI am trying to search for Dallas family history. Any pointers would be appreciated. Dave Dallas Name: Bob Tiernan CommentsDonald McIntosh, First Lieutenant, 7th Cavalry born: Sept 4, 1838[at]Jasper House, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. died: June 25, 1876 while commanding G Company[at]the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Son of James (John) and Charlotte Robinson McIntosh (she was a direct descendent of Red Jacket, a chief of the Six Nations). His father was a factor in the Hudson's Bay Co. and of the same Scotch family as Sir James McIntosh. His father was killed by Indians when Donald was 14. Donald lived[at]various posts of the Hudson's Bay Co. and[at]Vancouver [Washington] from 1846 to 1851,[at]Oregon City from 1851 to 1853, and in Portland in 1854. Also[at]Forts Dalles and Steilacoom during the 1854-60 period. Was serving as chief clerk for Colonel (later General) Daniel Rucker in 1861 and remained with him during the Civil War. Married Mary (Molly) Garrett on Oct 30, 1866 in Baltimore. Appointed as Second Lieutenant in the 7th US Cavalry effective August 17, 1867 and promoted to First Lieutenant in March 1870. In the absence of the company commander, McIntosh was assigned by Custer to command Company G in the 1876 Sioux War. McIntosh’s company was one of three companies taken into the Little Big Horn valley by Major Reno to initiate that battle. Reno formed a skirmish line across the valley flats for about 15 minutes after nearing the village, and then moved his men into the timber along the river where a defensive position was formed for about another 15 minutes. Reno lost control of the situation and ordered a withdrawal back across the river onto the high ground. In the disorganized rush towards a closer ford than the one the battalion crossed earlier, G Company was last to leave the timber and Lieutenant McIntosh was knocked from his horse and killed by Indian warriors closely pursuing the troops that were barely resisting (a slower withdrawal allowing cover fire would have prevented many casualties). McIntosh’s body was found badly mutilated two days later when a relief column arrived to aid the surviving portion of the regiment. McIntosh’s remains were buried where he fell, and then exhumed in July, 1877 and reinterred the following month in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Exhumed again in 1909 and reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery. His widow received a pension of $30 per month until her death on May 12, 1910. [Ref: "Men With Custer" by Kenneth Hammer]. Name: Bob Tiernan CommentsI see a lot of references to McIntosh ancestors from Canada. There was a Donald McIntosh born[at]Jasper House in Montreal in 1838, and killed[at]the Little Big Horn in 1876 while commanding Company G in Major Reno's battalion during the retreat from the valley some three or four miles from where Custer was killed. McIntosh was the son of a James (John) and Charlotte Robinson McIntosh. His father was a factor of the Hudson's Bay Company and was from the same Scotch family as Sir James McIntosh. If anyone knows anything about this particular family from Montreal I'd appreciate hearing about it. I'm particularly interested in knowing if Donald was the brother of Archibald McIntosh, a scout who served with army units in Oregon and California and who commanded in some small battles with Indian warriors. I was once told that they were brothers but never looked into it. See the next post for more detailed information regarding Donald McIntosh. [Much info in this and next post is from "Men With Custer" by Kenneth Hammer.] Name: Andrew Stewart Nairn CommentsI know the Nairns are a sept of the clan Macintosh but this does not show on your website.
