Name: Barney Bigman CommentsThis site has been of great help for me in my quest of compiling data on the livelihood of Archie McIntosh who lived during the mid eighteen hundreds. Since my first posting of a slight story on Archie and in requesting assistance from the McIntosh Clan for additional information, I have since been in contact with numerous McIntosh Individuals. As of date I’ve communicated with McIntosh’s from Maryland, Ohio, Oklahoma, Kansas, Ontario and different parts of Canada and also a couple from Scotland! Thus far my bibliography of Archie McIntosh is starting to look like a book. The following is an updated version of my last posting to this web site, in the spring of 2001. Archie McIntosh was the chief of scouts before Al Sieber at San Carlos, Arizona; this was during the 1800's and during the Apache conquest of that time. In being a long time friend of General Crook of the U.S. Calvary, he was personally requested and was appointed by Crook to set into place an Apache Scouting Party within the U.S. Calvary at San Carlos. Archie was instrumental in creating a working scouting program and of who were mostly full blood Apache men. The Program treated the Apache Warriors who participated, equally and fairly. The scouts received military rations, military pay, horses, cattle, tools, guns, ammunition, supplies for their families and what ever accommodations the government provided at that time. It was also during this time that the scouts were issued military uniforms and there was speculation that Archie introduced the insignia patch, which was worn by these scouts. The patch pictured two Apache War Lances, which are crossed. The patch was later adapted by the Special Scouting Units of the U.S. Army in the early 1900's and then was later worn by the U.S. Army Rangers Special Forces Unit. As much facts that I can get at this time about this patch is that it was last utilized in 1975 by the Green Bert Unit of the Army. Facts and accounts about Archie McIntosh can be found in numerous history books such as "The Conquest of Apacheria", "Al Sieber, Chief of Scouts", "Clan Chattan, Vol.IV, No.21960", and "An Apache Branch of Clan McIntosh", just to name a few. Archie was half Scot and half Ojibwe of the Chippewa Band of Ontario, Canada. Archie's grandparents on his father’s side of the family migrated from Scotland. His mother’s side of the family came from the Chippewa Band, which lived in the general areas of Minnesota, Michigan and Ontario. Archie started his military career in Oregon. In enhancing his tracking and scouting abilities he served the U.S. Military for a few years in the following states: Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona. Archie later married a woman who was half Apache and built his ranch at the Mesquite Springs on the Pinto Creek northwest of Globe, Arizona. He later moved to San Carlos and built his home south of the Gilson Wash just north of the present State highway 71. Remnants of his concrete dwellings are still present behind the Weeches Store, which no longer exist. Archie's son and grandson, Donald McIntosh Sr. and Donald McIntosh Jr. became well known Tribal Judges for the San Carlos tribal government. I and many of my great, great grandfather’s descendants live on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and in various parts of the Southwestern United States, although a few of us live elsewhere. As earlier stated, I am presently in the process of compiling an accurate account of Archie's historical bibliography.
